Fur The North runs a trapline, an in-house tannery and a sewing room at one Copper Cliff address in Greater Sudbury, turning beaver, coyote, wolf, seal, silver fox and polar bear hides into fur mittens and short-cuff mitts, trapper-style hats, fur vests and hand muffs, plus throws, pillows, Christmas stockings and mink teddy bears for the house, and selling tanned pelts, off-cut boxes and cowhide leather to other sewers.
Fur mittens, trapper-style hats, vests and hand muffs are articles of apparel and clothing accessories of furskin, HTS 4303.10.00 on the CBP Section 338 list, so a 50% duty has sat on top of every pair Fur The North sends to an American customer since August 22, 2026, on a beaver mitt priced at "$425.00 CAD" before the duty. The tanned beaver and otter pelts it sells to other sewers join the list on September 15, 2026 under HTS 4302.19.30 at the same 50%, and the Shopify storefront still offers a "United States" region priced in "USD".Source: content.govdelivery.com, Aug 22, 2026
Made in Canada
The tanning and the sewing both happen in the shop: "Each hide is ethically sourced and expertly tanned in-house using eco-conscious methods, then transformed into wearable art by Canadian hands", from furs "ethically sourced from Canadian trappers or sustainably harvested by Fur The North in the rich forest of the North Shore of Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada".
