a recent Government Whitehouse Gazzete has applied 50% tariffs to Canadian made artworks which was applied from the 22nd of AugustSource: jillianrossprint.com, Sep 9, 2026

Their fine art prints cross into the United States under HTS 9702.90.00, original engravings, prints and lithographs, at 50% since August 22, 2026, and the studio now publishes that duty rate on its own shipping page.

In their own words

  • We've got multiple artworks in customs at the moment that are stuck in customs and are now being returned because our American clients are refusing to pay the 50 per cent tariffs, which is completely understandable.

Brendan Copestake (quoted by CBC News) · cbc.ca, Sep 7, 2026

Co-owner Brendan Copestake told CBC News his studio has $75,000 worth of art stuck at a customs warehouse after an American buyer refused to pay the new 50% tariff.

  • Most of the Canadian artists, and there's thousands of them, are in a similar situation — printmakers, painters, drawers, sculptors, most of their market is U.S.-based. And if they're having a 50 per cent tariff slapped on their artworks, they're going to lose their customer base.

Brendan Copestake (quoted by CBC News) · cbc.ca, Sep 7, 2026

Copestake says the loss of U.S. buyers isn't unique to his studio but threatens most Canadian printmakers and artists, whose market is largely American.

  • Most businesses that are eligible need to have $1,000,000 revenue or more and be incorporated. And artists and studios like ourselves just don't fall into that category. I've yet to find any federal support for micro businesses like ourselves.

Brendan Copestake (quoted by CBC News) · cbc.ca, Sep 7, 2026

Copestake says his studio doesn't qualify for the federal tariff-relief programs Ottawa has rolled out, because those target larger incorporated businesses.
